Feed Green Oat Hay as part of your pets’ regular hay rotation, rather than as the only hay available to them. As oat hay can be a little richer than traditional grass hays, like Meadow or Timothy, it’s best served as part of a mix, with fresh grass hay making up around 80-90% of your rabbit, degu or guinea pig’s daily diet.
Sprinkle a small handful through their usual hay, or pop a little in a bowl, to add a tasty bit of variety, texture and extra nibbling interest.
Top up with fresh hay daily, remove any hay that’s become damp or messy, and always serve with fresh water.
Some snaps from our pet community
Green Oat Hay comes from oat plants cut while they’re still green, then dried to keep their lovely fresh colour and aroma. You’ll usually spot chunkier stalks and tasty seed heads, which many nibblers find irresistible.
Those little seed heads are a natural part of what makes our Green Oat Hay so tempting.
They add extra texture and a slightly sweeter, “nutty” smell, which can make hay time feel a bit more exciting for curious nibblers.
Green Oat Hay is still a fibre-rich hay, but because it can be a bit sweeter thanks to the oat seeds, lots of pet parents use it as a variety hay alongside a more classic grass hay such as Timothy Hay or Meadow Hay.
Mix it into their daily hay for foraging interest, rather than the only hay in the house.
Many guinea pigs love Green Oat Hay, especially because of the seed heads.
Some welfare guidance suggests offering oat hay as part of a mix rather than the only hay available, simply because it can be a little richer than traditional grass hays.
Good Green Oat Hay should look green-ish, springy, and smell clean and grassy (often with that slightly sweet “oaty” note).
If it feels damp, looks very brown, or smells musty, it’s usually past its best.
