“What’s the difference between hay and straw?” It’s one of those questions we get asked all the time – and we’re always happy to answer! They might look alike, but hay and straw couldn’t be more different. Each has a unique job to do when it comes to keeping your pets happy and cosy.
What is Straw? 🌾
Straw is like nature’s recyclable cushion – the stalk of a plant left over after the grain or seeds have been harvested. Because it’s dry and low in moisture, it’s great for making cosy nests and burrows. Our Barley Straw, harvested right here on the farm in the height of summer, is soft, snuggly, and perfect for keeping your little ones comfy.
What is Hay? 🌱
Hay, on the other hand, is all about nutrition. It’s made from grasses and herbs, harvested while they’re still alive and full of goodness. At Pillow Wad, we only use the first cut – the tastiest and most nutritious. It’s packed with fibre for healthy digestion and bursting with natural flavours that pets love. It’s a daily essential for your pet, helping them graze happily, just like they would in the wild.
Hay vs Straw: The Key Differences
🌾 Purpose: Hay is for eating; straw is for sleeping.
🌾 Texture: Hay is soft and full of flavour, while straw is drier and ideal for bedding.
🌾 Nutrition: Hay is packed with nutrients and fibre, while straw has no nutritional value but provides excellent insulation.
