A winter seasonal feast of herbs which are known to boost the immune system:
They can be fed as a snack or a topping for the main diet. Made from only natural ingredients. Ideal for all small animals, particularly rabbits, guinea pigs and other small rodents.
All herbs are harvested to human grade standards.
Elderberry – immune modulator – Elderberries contain organic pigments, tannin, amino acids, carotenoids, flavonoids, sugar, rutin, viburnic acid, vitaman A and B and a large amount of vitamin C. They are also mildly laxative, a diuretic, and diaphoretic. Flavonoids, including quercetin, are believed to account for the therapeutic actions of the elderberry flowers and berries. According to test tube studies these flavonoids include anthocyanins that are powerful antioxidants and protect cells against damage.
Wood betony – Wood Betony is not a herb that fixes things, it is not a ‘remedy’ like many of our other herbs. Wood Betony is a tonic, which means it helps the body to fix itself, slowly. In the West we tend to apply an opposite order of priority; that which works the slowest is seen as the weakest.
Rosehip Shells – The vitamin A is also beneficial to the immune system. It can help to prevent infections from both bacteria and viruses. It helps the immune system to fight off any infections that do occur too.
Don’t only take the time to stop and smell the roses, take a bit more time to eat the fruit too!
Yarrow Flower – anti bacterial/anti-infective – Yarrow has an antiseptic action. The bitter parts and fatty acids encourage bile flow out of the gallbladder. The free-flowing action improves digestion and prevents and gallstones from forming. Decongestant. Yarrow contains a drying effect and seems to improve coughs and sinus infections with sputum formation. Astringent. Very helpful with allergies where nasal secretions and watery eyes are caused by moulds, dust, pollen and dander.
Its basic components are Alpha Pinene, Acetate, Borneol, Beta Pinene, Borneol, Cineole, Camphene, Camphor, Gamma Terpinene, Isoartemisia Ketone, Chamazulene, Limonene, Sabinene and Tricyclene.
Lemon Balm – anti viral – lemon balm has traditionally been employed against bronchial inflammation, earache, fever, flatulence, headaches, high blood pressure, influenza, mood disorders, palpitations, toothache and vomiting.
Just because rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and rodents are small it doesn’t mean their needs should be over looked. They are just as important as any other pet and as such providing them with a rich, seasonal, stimulating environment and varied diet is a fundamental to their wellbeing.
Spread around your pet’s home they can enjoy sniffing around to find every last crumb or for an extra challenge mix into their hay to see them forage!
